I've been focusing on entertainment a lot these days. It's been good and I've encountered all kinds of coolness along the way. I'm thankful for that. I haven't abandoned my faith and social justice interests, I'm still passionate about those but there are seasons when you have to tend one field more than another. And it's not like you can separate the passions of your life anyway, they all kind blend in together making you who you are. And I'm happy with who I am. The road hasn't been perfect but I've been blessed in countless regards.

I'll just share a few things that have inspired me lately...

California sunshine.
Olivia Wilde's website (she chats of vegetarianism and activism, two of my favorite subjects).
Twilight Sleep (they're a super neat band and I listen to their music quite often).
Nachos. They're always fun to eat.
Sunsets. I still make the effort to enjoy as many as I can.
Kit-Kat candy bars.
Good conversations and smiles.

I'm glad to be alive and to be able to experience so many awesome things, some planned and some completely unexpected.

So many times I want to pull the car over, to stop and watch the sunset pass, but I don't. Errands to run. Places to be. Things to do. You know the drill. But this one day I drove into a shopping center parking lot with the sole intent of enjoying a few minutes of the sun before it went away.

When's the last time you got out of your car to savor a sunset?

Fireflight Concert

I had an awesome time at the Fireflight concert over the weekend. I've been wanting to see them for a long, long time and it finally happened. Of course Fireflight rocked hard, lots of head banging on their part and mine. Pillar was the headline band and they had some major rock action going on too.

Expect Nothing In Return

I just read this blog post at Get Togetha and it was so awesome I had to share...

There are only two emotions: love and fear. When we we give based on strings it is a subtle form of manipulation. Manipulation is fear. When we give through a tiny yet powerful act called love we understand that what we give to others we give to ourselves whether its reciprocated or not. When we give from love the good things overflow in abundance.

Satisfied...

I was just thinking about how satisfied I am with my overall concert experiences. I've been able to see some of my favorite bands and singers use their God-given talents on stage which are little (and big) dreams come true. And those moments are magical, when songs connect to your heart in ways only music can.

I remember how Jennifer Knapp cradled her guitar in her arms as she sang "A Little More" in her quiet but captivating storytelling voice.

I remember seeing Switchfoot twice. Once front and center at the House of Blues. Then again at a bigger venue after they had their breakout album The Beautiful Letdown.

I remember being in a mosh pit at a P.O.D. concert and standing next to some guy dressed in all black wearing a baseball cap with metal spikes on it (which I eventually moved away from because it was an accident waiting to happen).

I remember sitting so far away from LeAnn Rimes that I couldn't see her as I camped along the Charles River waiting for the 4th of July fireworks to start.

I remember dancing next to my sister at a Stacie Orrico concert and walking away feeling like I had the time of my life.

I remember holding back tears and being overwhelmed with a deep thanksgiving toward God as Fred Hammond sang soul-stirring Gospel tunes.

I remember jumping up and down to the punk rock sounds of Relient K.

I remember riding in the car with a friend for 40 minutes, waiting in line for another 40 to only end up catching the last song of Lights (and that last song was pretty amazing).

I remember feeling completely electrified to finally, FINALLY, see Superchic[k] play after two previous attempts where something always seemed to suddenly pop up just before the show.

Those memories are irreplaceable.

Because our lives do come with soundtracks whether we realize it or not. Sometimes music comes with bright lights and sometimes it comes from a tiny speaker in the sanctuary of our homes. Whatever the case, music is beautiful and it gives us reasons to smile, to gather and to enjoy each other's company as we journey through this existence called life.

Now I know what it feels like to be part of a historic moment in time. Countless people throughout the years put their blood, sweat and tears on the line so that this kind of event could be possible.

1. I collect calendars, ones that feature different countries and lighthouses.

There are certain scriptures that light up in my mind like fireworks.

I think this will be my theme for the New Year:

2 Timothy 4:5 says:

"But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you." (New Living Translation)

The Message Version puts it this way:

"But you—keep your eye on what you're doing; accept the hard times along with the good; keep the Message alive; do a thorough job as God's servant."

It's a simple way of summing up what we as Christians are supposed to do.

1. Share the story of Jesus.
2. Share how Jesus' story transformed our lives (it's okay to share our flaws as well, we're only human and our frailty helps other people connect to us).
3. Live a life of purpose, doing the tasks (career, family, friendships) that only you can fulfill.

For me writing is an important part of my life so I've been working hard on my screenplay. By this time next year I believe that will be in some stage of production. I really feel like my creativity is part of my ministry.

And this will be my unofficial theme song...

"Push It To The Limit" by Corbin Bleu.

The lyrics to that song always kind of rev me up.

And Mary Mary's "Get Up" is pretty inspiring too.

Front of the Class

Great film! Front of the Class is an inspiring story about a boy with Tourette syndrome who battles discrimination to realize his dream of becoming a grade school teacher. If you enjoy Hallmark Hall of Fame movies then you'll be delighted by this one. Front of the Class really knows how to pull your heart strings. And what's even more inspirational is that it's based on a true story. It stars Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) and James Wolk (who seriously looks like he could be Kyle Chandler's little brother).

Prayers for Mumbai

Just wanted to say that Mumbai is in my thoughts. For such a tragedy to strike the center of Bollywood is quite saddening. India is an amazing country full of intriguing sights and people. Also, pray for the Christians over there because some still face persecution.

Native American Heritage Month

This is the month where our country is supposed to take the time to spotlight and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of those indigenous to our land.

November is the national Native American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month. But why am I just learning about this?

And where's the coverage in the news?

I feel embarrassed and saddened when I think about how little our country pays attention to Native Americans. The only time I can remember seeing a news story centered on a Native issue was when CNN did a short piece interviewing Alaskan Natives on what they thought about Gov. Sarah Palin.

I mean, come on, one story a year is completely subpar.

I wish that there was some magical solution to make things right in this country but easy answers are hard to find. So what are your thoughts on the issue? Do you think things are fine as they are? If not, what kind of change would you like to see happen?

Nicholas Sparks Writing Film for Miley Cyrus

According to Variety.com:

"Nicholas Sparks is writing a new novel and an accompanying screenplay that is being custom-fit as a star vehicle for Miley Cyrus at Disney."

I wasn't expecting this collaboration but it makes sense. Miley has a huge teen fan base and Sparks knows how to make teen girls cry i.e. A Walk to Remember and The Notebook. We all know the story is going to be inspirational and bittersweet. And that's a good thing.

Jared Padalecki as Thomas Kinkade

Jared Padalecki in a Christmas movie is a gift all by itself. I'll definitely be buying The Christmas Cottage on DVD.

Thomas Kinkade is one of my favorite artists, I'm a big fan of impressionism and he's a true example of how Christians can aspire for excellence in their creative endeavors.

The film is about "how the Kinkade was motivated to begin his career after discovering his mother was in danger of losing their family home" (IMDB).

Kristi Yamaguchi Friends & Family

I've enjoyed watching professional figure skating since I was little girl.

It's graceful, poetic and every time they land their jumps I get the tingles. Sure, figure skating can be a little cheesy at times but that adds to its charm. Plus, anyone who can do a triple salcow deserves respect.

This year the Kristi Yamaguchi Friends & Family special featured live performances by the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato. It's amazing how seamless teeny-bopper music and ice skating blend together. It's like caramel apples, sugary sweet. To top off all the cuteness you get to watch skating legends share the ice with their kids. It's adorable. Nancy Kerrigan and Yamaguchi are my long time favorites and it's always cool to see them share the rink together.

Obama Won! And what it means...

The United States of America is going to have its first black president come January 2009 and that's pretty cool. Actually, it's awesome!

When CNN declared Obama as the winner, I had this surreal feeling. Was this really happening? And in my lifetime? There are no words to describe the rush of emotion that came over me. I didn't cry but I did a lot of smiling. I smiled as I listened to Roland Martin talk about how he felt honored to be one of the newscasters on such a historic night. I smiled as I watched people in Africa cheer for Obama. I smiled as Michelle Obama and her two little girls walked onto the stage. And I smiled as I texted my friends and family, sharing the good news with them.

So what does Obama's win mean to you?

Dreams from His Grandmother

Senator Obama's grandmother passed away before she could see if he would be the next president of the the United States of America. I can only imagine how proud she must have been of him.

I've been pondering all day who I should vote for. Even though I'm leaning toward Obama, I'm still unsure. I consider myself an independent. I don't have an allegiance to any political party, I simply consider the options and vote for the best person. So who is the best person for our country? Who should our leader be? There are things about all the candidates that make me uneasy (yes, there are more than two). And it's always been that way when it comes to politicians. It's hard to decipher who's really telling the truth.

What I do know is that if Obama wins, a part of me will be happy, ecstatic even. The world will see us differently and I will see my country differently. A piece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream will have came true.

I also know that our struggle is not against Republican or Democrat but against "the forces and powers of a dark world." We see that darkness everyday in the images that flash across our TV screen of children going to bed without food, of women being sold into sex trafficking, of children being kidnapped and people being murdered.

When it all comes down to it my vote is for love. My vote is goodness and kindness. My vote is for faith and hope. My vote is for art and creativity that inspires us to reach for more, to be more and to give more.

This world is not my eternal home even though I've lived here for 25 years. There are a million things I love about this planet like sunsets, beaches, hot cocoa and great conversations. But there's more to life than what the eyes can see and what the fingers can touch. The USA is a great country and I support its efforts to offer people a fair place to live and carve out their niche.

I get all my dreams about the goodness of humanity from my Heavenly Father. And whoever you chose to vote for, think about Jesus and how he did things that went against popular opinion, against the religious people who thought they knew it all. He understood that there was more to life than what's written on money and who's in office. All people mattered to him. They still do.

High School Musical 3

I'm one of those people who eagerly awaited to see HSM 3 in theaters.

I like everything about these movies, from the dance numbers to the cutesy storylines and right down to Sharpay's over the top mean girl. The High School Musical gang left us with some fun movie moments and HSM 3 wraps up the trilogy quite nicely.

Actor Spotlight: Anthony Montgomery

Anthony Montgomery has been part of the Star Trek universe, the indie film circuit and now the music scene with his upcoming album. Whether he's soaring space as Ensign Travis Mayweather in Star Trek: Enterprise or running from girls in The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks, Montgomery has all the right ingredients to emerge as one of Hollywood's leading men.

Here's my Q&A with him:

1. Authenticity is an overused word in most art forms. What does it mean to you and how does your definition influence your acting?

I'm a fan of using definitions from the source. Webster defines authenticity as true to one's own personality, spirit, or character. At this point in my life I know who I am. I infuse the essence of who I am into each character, making sure to live in truth, moment to moment, on screen.

2. People get into acting for a lot of different reasons. What drives you?

I'm an entertainer, a performer. I got into acting because performing is in my blood. From the moment I did my first play in college (a children's theater piece) I was hooked. I'm driven to be the best I can be so I continually look for roles that will challenge me as an actor.

3. What's your process for picking projects? What elements have to be in a script to make you say "I have to audition for that role"?

Early in my career, I allowed others to guide my choices and many roles were chosen out of necessity. Now I choose projects that truly move me. I have to see something on the page that makes me want to be a part of telling that particular story to the world. I love character driven scripts. Be it comedy or drama, the characters I'm drawn to need to have depth, exploring a broad array of emotions.

4. What do you do to cheer yourself up when you don't the the part?

When I don't get a part I allow myself to go through the emotion of being disappointed, but being an eternally optimistic person, I don't stay in that space long. I was taught by my mother and grandmother that when one door closes, God opens several more. I believe that when I am meant to have a role it will be mine so I try not to get attached to a part just because I want it. I focus on doing the work. God will handle the rest.

5. Your film The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks might be classified as a black artsy film by some. What kind of films would you like to see developed by minority filmmakers?

I don't know if you know, but the distributer (Image Entertainment) changed the title of the film back to it's original title I'm Through with White Girls. I'm not a fan of that title, especially since that's not what the film is about, but that is their prerogative. As for the film, Jay Brooks was a fun character to play because we don't see characters like that portrayed very much. I would love to see minority filmmakers continue to raise the bar and elevate the images of minorities on screen. As a black man, I want to see more uplifting images of black men depicted in stories.

6. What actors/directors are you most interested in collaborating with?

There are so many amazingly talented actors and directors out there that I just want to continue amassing a solid body of work throughout my career. A partial list of the some of the men I'd love to work are: Sidney Poiter (it would be an honor to work with him in any capacity), Denzel Washington, both as an actor and a director, Don Cheadle, Forrest Wittaker, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Will Smith, Francis Ford Coppola (a genius), John Singleton, Spike Lee, Terrance Howard, Peter Jackson, Viggo Mortensen, Matt Damon, Jet Li and John Woo. Some of the women I'd love to work with include: Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, Mary Harron, Sophia Coppola, Charlize Theron, Thandie Newton, Halle Berry, Liv Tyler, Scarlett Johansson, Keira Knightly, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Connelly, Tea Leone, Jada Pinkett Smith, Helen Hunt, Marisa Tomei, Natalie Portman, Ziyi Zhang, Maria Bello and Jessie Nelson. Again this is a short list. There are too many list them all.

7. Do you see yourself stepping behind the camera anytime soon?

Directing is an art unto itself. I do plan to get behind the camera at some point but that's going to be a very gradual process for me. I've written a short film that I'll probably direct (at least co-direct) at some point. I figure that'll help me ease my way into the director's chair. Right now I'm going to focus on work in front of the camera.

8. What are some of your upcoming projects?

After Star Trek: Enterprise ended, I took some time away from the entertainment industry and focused on my personal life. When I returned to the industry we were in the middle of a writer's strike so I shifted my energy from being on screen to finishing my debut Hip Hop album, "A.T," which is being released internationally October 17, 2008. The album is being released by an independent record label in Germany (AGR Television Records) and distributed through Universal Music Group. The first single, "Bullskittin'," will be available soon.

While recording the album, I worked as one of the leads in a short film, The Porter (directed by Vincent Singleton) which won the HBO/Chase Legacy Film Challenge. The short will air during HBO's regular programming schedule.

I'm Through with White Girls is currently available nationwide on DVD.

9. Anything else you'd like to add?

MESTO: Multi-Ethnic Star Orchestra

It's amazing how music can bring people together.

A few nights ago I watched a documentary about how the MESTO orchestra united Jews and Muslims. The conductor talked about how he started the group to counteract all the turmoil that happens between Jews and Muslims in the Middle East. He believes that this kind of work, the building of friendships and bonding over commonalities will bring about the right kind of change. And I agree with him.

MESTO is based in Los Angeles and they travel the world (particularly the Middle East) performing their unique blend of traditional Western orchestra pieces as well as Middle Eastern arrangements.

Sex Slaves in the Suburbs

Human trafficking is an American problem too.

Last night I watched one of the most riveting documentaries about teenagers being kidnapped and sold into prostitution. MSNBC's Sex Slaves in the Suburbs centered around the horrific story of Shauna Newell, a then 16-year-old who was tricked into a Florida sex trafficking ring. She was repeatedly drugged, raped and beaten and nearly sold off and lost forever to someone in Texas.

When teens go missing the police often chalk it up to them being runaways but with human trafficking and the sex industry becoming more lucrative there's a great chance that teens are getting sucked into that realm. And when you examine the Red Light hot spots around the world you realize that it's not only teens and adults who get caught in its snares. I've seen several documentaries that show little girls (and boys) being sold to the highest bidder, with some being as young as 7-years-old. Can you even begin to imagine the horrific lifestyle that awaits such a child? They lose themselves and become indoctrinated by their pimps and captors that sex is all they're good for and that their life could be taken away from them at any moment. It's a sad reality for countless youth.

There aren't many songs that deal with this heavy subject but Aly & AJ's "I Am One of Them" talks about their concern to help missing children:

It's hard to look outside my door / with all the news reports and more / yet I will do my part and stay on alert / for all the kids out there who are getting hurt / it could have happened to me / can you make me believe / this could have a happy end / 'cause I am one of them

Every time I listen that song it tugs on my heart so deeply and I've kind of made it my theme song to inspire me to find ways to be active in the cause against human trafficking.

Reel Artsy

A couple of my favorite movies are Garden State and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. They're quirky, offbeat and fun. Plus, they feature two of my favorite actresses Natalie Portman and Kate Winslet who are prime examples of women who've built solid careers on playing a smorgasbord of versatile characters.

Which brings me to my latest blogging venture. I started up a new supplemental blog to Think Virtue! called Reel Artsy where I will spotlight quirky films by minority filmmakers. I'll be posting short summaries/reviews of cool films that I think are noteworthy. It will include trailers and links to film festivals and such. And at some point I'm hoping to do some brief interviews with the indie filmmakers who are producing these kind of movies.

I'll be covering...black films, Latino films, Arab films, biracial films, Deaf Culture films, Asian films, Native American films, Christian films, experimental films and pretty much anything that aspires to do something a little "outside of the box."

Journalists Do Care!

"The media" has become a dirty phrase in our society.

They're often blamed as being part of the problem instead of being part of the solution. Some people call them heartless. Some people call them money-hungry. And some people just call them plain stupid. But contrary to popular belief, some journalists really care. They're not in it for the money, the fame or whatever people want to negatively associate them with. When it comes down to it, they're regular people who dedicate their lives to telling stories that need to be told. And that's courageous.

The 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games

I wish the Paralympics got more media attention in the United States. I was only able to catch some repeats of wheelchair basketball on Canadian TV (CBC) and get updates online.

How can our country so easily ignore its athletes with disabilities? They train just as hard as anyone else and they're competing on a world level. It takes devotion and sacrifice to get where they are and the general public should have a chance to be inspired by some of their stories.

Even though the Paralympics took place Sept. 6 - 17th, The New York Times reports that:

"As for conventional television coverage, none will be seen in the United States until Oct. 8, when NBC’s cable sports channel, Universal Sports TV, will broadcast three hours of programming for seven days. Those shows will consist of highlights and features on particularly compelling athletes."

Couldn't they have at least broadcasted some of the events live? Or what about airing it on basic cable channels?

America needs to remodel their strategy when it comes to the Paralympics because the current plan is a real disservice.

What are your thoughts on it?

Activist Spotlight: Nazanin Afshin-Jam

With the help of a global Internet campaign Nazanin was able to save a teenager from an unfair execution in Iran.

"Last year we were specifically working on one girl's case who was on death row and we managed to collect 350,000 signatures. How we managed that was a lot through MySpace supporters and just people forwarding on emails and such. Definitely the Internet helps in our rally," said Nazanin.

Not a lot of people can put Miss World runner up, international singer and human rights activist on their resume but for Nazanin Afshin-Jam that's only the beginning of her amazing bio.

If you listen to Nazanin's song "Someday" you'll get a quick story of how her family was forced out of Iran when she was a small child and how they ended up in Canada.

She's gracefully intertwined her love for social justice and her Christian faith to live out what seems like a great example of a purpose-driven life.

I got the chance to talk with Nazanin about her rally against President Ahmadinejad held earlier this week in New York City, her non-profit organization called Stop Child Executions and how she hopes Christians can be further involved in the cause.

"A few weeks ago I heard the news that President Ahmadinejad would be coming back to the US, well to the United Nations to the general assembly to speak. And close to that time I got the news that two more imminent cases of children who were facing the death penalty and I just came to the point where we have to stand up, we have to be the voice of the those who don't have one inside of Iran and this is a great opportunity to come to New York, to hold a demonstration and to spread to the rest of the world that Ahmadinejad does not represent the voices of the people inside Iran," said Nazanin.

"I think a lot of people on the outside don't know that distinction. They think that Ahmadinejad is the president so naturally he represents the thoughts and the wishes of the people. And the way the government is set up in Iran the electoral process is not a democratic system where you can just vote for whoever you want. The candidates are pre-screened and so you just end up with a handful of people who represent a very extreme side of the political spectrum so you really don't have a choice. And because Iran is a police-like state, the people they can't really rise up and speak against the government without facing harsh consequences like torture or execution...so it's a really difficult position for them. Our demonstration is also a symbolic way to just let the rest of the world know that Ahmadinejad does not represent our voices and we have Iranian voices speaking at the rally who will speak a wide range of views on issues going on in Iran. But more specifically on human rights abuses that are taking place in Iran."

When it comes to supporters in various Iranian communities around the world Nazanin reports that the overall tone is pretty positive and that only "a small percentage, maybe less than 1 percent that are part of the fundamentalism, the extremists" who oppose the critical work she's doing for women's' rights issues.

Later on I asked her how she would like to see Christians be more involved.

"We get support from all communities and all religions. Specifically I would call onto the Christian community because inside Iran a lot of the Christians are being persecuted. You can't really practice your faith openly especially if you are a convert. If you used to be Muslim and you converted to Christianity you could be charged with apostasy and be sentenced to death. A new bill just came out this month which condones this, that if you're an apostate you can be put to death. And it's a huge concern not just for Christians but for the Jewish population, the Bahá'í community, the Zoroastrians. A lot of the religious minorities in Iran are really scared about this new bill."

If you're interested in being part of Stop Child Executions you can sign the petition, start an activism group on your college campus, donate to the fund and mostly importantly help spread the word in your local community.

"It's a responsibility of Christians around the world to get active," said Nazanin, "and to put pressure on the Iranian government that if someone wants to practice their faith they have the right. It's part of our universal declaration of human rights."

Canadian TV - Sophie

Sophie is probably the best show you're not watching.

Sophie Parker is a woman who's trying to find balance between being a single mom, running her own business and escaping her manipulative mother's plot to hook her back up with her ex. The show is full of quirky characters, funny scenarios and an intriguing plot.

Natalie Brown (Sophie) is a completely charming in the lead role. It's easy to imagine her starring in the next Gary Marshall romantic comedy à la Runaway Bride or Never Been Kissed.

Sophie airs Wednesday nights at 8:30 p.m. (EST) on CBC. The new season starts on Oct. 1st.

Off-Broadway Version of C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters

C.S. Lewis was a great storyteller and his tales still resonate with audiences today.

If you're a theatre buff or simply a C.S. Lewis fan then you might want to check out out the FPA Theatre Company's presentation of The Screwtape Letters coming to Chicago this fall. The play has been performed in front of sold out crowds in New York City and Washington, D.C. plus it's gotten some pretty good reviews from major newspapers.

I'm not a huge theatre-goer but it's good to know that Christians are producing quality stuff for the stage.

The Screwtape Letters tells the story of a young demon getting advice from his uncle on how to manipulate humans done in a comical yet poignant way.

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin on SNL

I can't remember the last time I watched SNL but I did tune in for Tina Fey's guest appearance as Sarah Palin. And I must admit it was one of the most hilarious impersonations I've ever seen! Tina Fey and Amy Poehler nailed the opening skit brialliantly as Gov. Palin and Sen. Clinton. All politics aside, that was a great comedic moment.

Film Spotlight: Relapse

Subtlety would be the art that most Christian films lack. Many times Christian filmmakers get caught up in trying to drill a message into our head that they forget to craft a quality story that could engage viewers on its own. If you've been in Christian circles long enough you've most likely got sucked into watching one of those sappy, poorly acted films at a church function were the dialogue is extremely bad and everything is neatly packaged in the end. But bad movies aren't limited to the Christian community. If you watch the SciFi Channel late at night I'm pretty sure you'll find a movie just as poorly constructed and made on a bigger budget.

Thankfully, Relapse isn't one of those movies. It's the kind of substantial work that Christian filmmakers need to produce. For a short film, it accomplishes rhythm, tone and character development rather efficiently. We are quickly drawn into the world of a husband and wife struggling with the lost of a child. Newcomer Cassandra Lawson plays the part of the grieving mother, her performance is seasoned with a delicate balance of emotion and depth. Lawson's interaction with the adorable child actor offers a compelling cinematic moment.

However, the chief accomplishment of Relapse is its feel. It treads on waters of dramatic and eerie. Director Ryan Smith understands that sometimes a film's best sequences are when nothing is said. Smith forms scenes that fill the silence with skilled purpose alongside a captivating music score by Jim Daneker that invokes the right heart strings to create a beautiful piece of storytelling.

Yet Relapse is not without its flaws, there are some lines that could have been sharper like the "I'm beginning to think you live here" one. But that's a small pebble in a film that flows quite gracefully.

Jordin Sparks to the VMAs: Promise Rings Rock!

Not only can Jordin Sparks sing, she's bold enough to stand up for what she believes in, even when she's in front of millions of viewers at the MTV Music Videos Awards. Throughout the program British host Russell Brand poked fun of the Jonas Brothers and their symbols of chastity, but that was until Sparks said this:

"I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It's not bad to wear a promise ring because not everybody, guy or girl, wants to be a slut."

I would have worded the latter part a little differently but she gets major kudos for her fierceness.

Rachael Lampa Performs at The Republican National Convention

The Republicans get kudos for including Rachael Lampa in their program but that doesn't mean I'll be voting for McCain. I'm still undecided when it comes to choosing between the two candidates but I'll post more about that later.

If you've been listening to Christian music as long as I have then you probably know who Rachael Lampa is. If not, that's okay. I started listening to Lampa back when she made a grand entrance into the Christian music world as the teenage girl with the big voice. I remember seeing her in concert with Stacie Orrico and Plus One. But enough of my trip down memory lane. Lampa's voice has cultivated quite nicely over the years and I'm glad to see she's still in the music scene.

Band Spotlight: Fairgreen

In a world full of fancy desserts sometimes you just want a nice slice of homemade apple pie. Fairgreen is that heaping slice of comforting emo rock that keeps you "coming back for more" no matter what trendy concoction is being served in the music industry. Their songs "Don't Look Back" and "Every Chance" offer simple heartfelt lyrics and beautifully crafted harmonies that pulsate oodles of raw emotion.

I caught up with the drummer, Kenny, to get a little insight on Fairgreen and their future aspirations.

1. What's the meaning behind your band's name?

Fairgreen is a street we used to practice on for awhile, we thought it was good for a band name.

2. How did growing up in Baltimore influence your music?

I think growing up in Baltimore was a good thing for us musically. Baltimore has a pretty good music scene and there are a lot of different styles and people here so we get to have a bigger outlook on people and music in general.

3. What are some important life lessons that you've learned from touring?

I think after touring you really get to see a lot of different people and different places and it makes you realize that there are a lot of bigger problems out in the world that are more important then some of the stupid little stuff that we call problems.

4. Are there any music artists or producers you are eager to collaborate with?

We would love to work with Relient K and Mark Townsend (Relient K's producer). They are a big influence on us and we love how they write.

5. Could you walk us through what the recording process has been like for your upcoming album?

The recording process for the new album is a lot different then the last one. This time we all went out and got home recording programs and we each record song ideas at home and then bring the song idea to the rest of the band and go from there. Then after messing with the song for awhile we go back and record what we got and listen to it for awhile before we ever actually record the real thing in the studio.

6. What are three goals you would like to see Fairgreen accomplish by this time next year?

1. We would like to have a new CD out.
2. Signed with a record label.
3. Another new music video.

This is how an Olympian's heart breaks

I was really rooting for Lolo Jones to win the womens 100m hurdles race. I read about her inspiring story from being a homeless teen in Iowa to becoming one of the fastest hurdlers in the world. But all it takes is one bump in the road, or in her case, one hurdle to shatter a lifelong dream. She was so close to winning a gold medal. So close!

Yet Lolo still has a lot to be proud of. She overcame some tough circumstances, worked really hard and got the privilege to represent her country on a world stage. I hope she remembers that. But I know this loss is going to sting for a while. Darts in the heart usually do.

Music Spotlight: Sarah MacIntosh

Chasing Furies was a 90s alternative rock band that emerged in a time when the Christian music industry wasn't ready for their sound. If Chasing Furies were a TV show it would be My So Called Life, beautifully crafted yet regrettably short-lived.

But sometimes exquisite voices get a second chance. Such is the case with Sarah MacIntosh who's alluring fans once again with her dreamy vocal style in a solo project released earlier this year called The Waiters, The Watchers, The Listeners, The Keepers and Me.

MacIntosh was kind enough to share some insights with Think Virtue! on Chasing Furies, creativity and her self-proclaimed shyness.

Here's our Q&A:

1. Since re-entering the music scene, what did you learn from the first time around that helped prepare for this album?

There are many things from the first time around that I've learned that I have taken into this latest venture. I have learned much better what the "Christian music industry" is there for. Who the people are and what they want. I think with my previous band Chasing Furies we had a misconception of who the Christian music listener/buyer was and now I know more clearly who it is and have hopefully made a record that is me speaking to that person.

2. Why was it so important for you to make and share this album with the world?

I feel like it is a Christian's responsibility to share the Gospel with those around them. To share what they are learning and what things the Lord has shown them. I feel like in my relationships with people as a friend and person I should be helping people grow closer to the Lord and the best way I am able to do these things is through music. I tend to be shy and unable to talk to people about the deep things that go on in my life but for some reason it is easy to put it into song and share that way so this is what I do and through my music I hope that those who listen do draw closer to the Lord.

3. What do you hope that people take away from listening to your music?

I hope that people would listen and see new truths about who He is and how we can draw closer to Him. I would want them to listen and feel refreshed and uplifted and encouraged.

4. You traveled to Europe earlier this year. How did the audience respond when you performed at the Methodist Central Hall in London?

In each of the places that I played in Europe this year I have been blown away by the response. These are people who have not previously ever heard of me before and yet they enjoyed the music and were able to get the songs that I sang and their meaning as well.

5. Outside of music, what inspires your creativity?

I am an avid reader and runner. There is something in words and other peoples thoughts that inspires me. The way they phrase their ideas and try to communicate a thought to me encourages me to become better and more creative about the way I phrase my thoughts and ideas in my songs. As a runner I have been able to travel all over the world and see cities in a different way by running through them. It is quiet time I have alone in a city where I just get to ponder the people and the culture and the creation that they live in. I am able pray and think about the things the Lord is showing me and process them throughout the run and sometimes come home with the beginnings of a song already formed and shaping in my mind.

6. What would you say is your favorite thing about yourself?

Early in my life the I read Psalms 139 and the verse that says "I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made" jumped out at me. I know as a woman that I was created fearfully and wonderfully and that I don't have to worry about being self conscious about the way I look or how I sound as a musician or singer. I am confident that He has created me to be who I am and that is the person that He wants to use...not someone I try to make myself into being. He doesn't need her. He needs me as He created me. I would say it is this confidence in myself, that my parents reinforced my whole life, that is my favorite thing. It helps me not be distracted by myself and any insecurities I may have and instead to be able to focus on Him and what He has planned for me.

7. Any plans for a Chasing Furies reunion? Or any special limited performances together?

Oh how fun it would be to have a chasing furies reunion. I have sung many times with my sister singing backup vocals for me and have enjoyed it very much. I don't foresee any reunion though. We are a family and sing together and enjoy each other as much as possible but I don't see it ever taking the form of Chasing Furies again.

Questions Not Asked

In this 2008 presidential election some questions and issues are being left out and ignored as usual.

When are the candidates going to mention Native Americans? When was the last time a candidate had a nationally televised forum centered on the issues of people with disabilities? And what about the Deaf community? Or little people? And the list goes on. It's usually the same old arguments with the presidential debates.

Conservative vs. liberal.

But when was the last time that either side really advocated for those groups of people? When have they made a big push to bring their issues to the forefront?

It's clear that we have a war in Iraq, that our economy is struggling and our environment needs preservation. But let's not forget about the other stuff.

What are some questions you'd like to hear the presidential candidates discuss?

The 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics

The Olympics will always have a unique spiritual undertone. They remind us that no matter where we come from or what language we speak that underneath it all we are equally human. For a couple of weeks we get to see just how connected our world really is. We get to see touching stories about athletes who have spent their whole lives training for a moment to make their country, their family and their friends proud. Most athletes will walk from the summer games without a medal, but they will leave forever changed and so will we, the viewers.

Music Spotlight: Lights

Lights is the musical equivalent of sitting by a campfire and making s'mores. Her music warms you with its idyllic lyrics and her sound is deliciously sweet, melting you with its simple honesty. She rocks a keytar and enjoys using words like stellar and tubular. When she talks she speaks with a kindness in her voice that exudes a mix of bubbly youth and sage.

It's apparent that she's tapped into the kind of originality that most artists long for. From her style (signature headbands and the occasional fanny pack) to the true-to-herself vibe that she’s created while garnering some national attention. You may have heard her songs in the latest batch of Old Navy commercials. "The Last Thing On Your Mind" is perhaps the most stunning because the melody lingers with you long after the commercial ends.

Although Lights is not her given name she said "it's like a one word description of everything I want to say to the world."

Growing up as the daughter of missionaries she's lived in places like the Philippines and Jamaica. And for her, inspiration comes in all types of forms.

"I'm inspired more by the things I see...driving through a city or walking through a city with no music or anything. You have to walk and not hear anything to like hear it the most."

She says Phil Collins "is like a superhero of mine" and other than Collins she would enjoy collaborating with Kanye West because she thinks the blending of genres could produce something cool.

Lights doesn't court hype and doesn't want to become jaded by seeing herself on TV. In fact, she doesn't even own a TV and that probably works in advantage for her fans who eagerly await her next project.

When it comes to touring she would love to play in Paris, which only seems fitting for Lights to want to play in the "City of Lights." The Canadian singer also looks forward to playing in Los Angeles and touring in the States.

But Lights isn't all about music. She knows the value of taking the time to express her creativity in other ways.

"You can't put it all out in music because you get spent. You have to release it somewhere else so I do a lot of painting. I paint like pop art. Sort of like comic book style...and I also draw comics and someday I'll put out a graphic novel or something."

Holly Hunter talks about the influence of music on Saving Grace

Not only is the Academy Awarding-winning Holly Hunter passionate about being a good actress, she's also passionate about good music.

On her TNT show Saving Grace, she portrays Grace Hanadarko, an Oklahoma City detective who goes through booze, men and solving crimes at an alarming rate. As Grace seems to be spiraling in circles she gets a chance to turn her life around when a rough-around-the-edges angel appears after she accidentally hits a pedestrian late one night while driving.

Grace's storyline gives Hunter a perfect opportunity to explore music that wades through the waters of various emotions and illuminates her character's inner struggle to find hope and redemption.

"We used Anthony and the Johnsons last year and we're using another song of theirs this year. I got turned onto them through Lou Reed. Since Lou Reed is such a collaborator, he's got his ear to the ground, you know, for new music" says Hunter, over the phone, "We're using 'Fistful of Love'...that's a song of theirs that Lou actually also sings on. We've kind of shaped one of the episodes around that song...it can be about Grace but it can also be about a crime. So the writers wrote this really fabulous script and we just finished shooting it."

Making music an intricate part of the storytelling process has become somewhat of a theme for the show. Another episode of Saving Grace will be centered around a song from The Pixies and Hunter is especially enjoyed how a Kid Rock song in episode two came together, "it's a perfect marriage between a scene and a song."

Hunter uses all kinds of music to help her get into character from Queen to The Black Keys to TV on the Radio but she said that "Lou Reed is and will continue to be my touchstone for this show."

Music Spotlight: DJ Keebz

DJ Keebz has toured with notable Christian hip-hop acts like TobyMac and Grits. When he's not on the road he's the house DJ for the The Logan Show, a late-night Christian talk show, as well as radio producer for the Weekend 22 and on-air talent at WNAZ.com.

Here's my Q&A with him:

1. How would you describe your style?

Well, very "East Coast" most would say, but you'll find a hint of Hispanic influences in there as well. I'm not Hispanic, but I am from Tampa, Fla. so that comes through a bit. More so than anything, I'm a big fan of live instruments, so you will always find that in there as well. Although I am from "The South" I'm not a fan of southern rap...we can do better than that.

2. What equipment do you use?

2 vestax turntables, 2 pioneer cdj-1000's, 1 Rane ttm-56 mixer, 2 hands, 1 soul.

3. Which format do you like the best: Vinyl, CDs or digital downloads?

Vinyl.

4. What were some of your favorite moments when you toured with TobyMac?

My favorite moment was when we performed in Gatlinburg, Tenn. My parents where finally able to see my on tour performing, it was the last time my mom saw me perform before she past away...they were really proud.

5. What music artists are you eager to collaborate with?

Mims, Soujaboy...I'M SO KIDDING!!! Right now, I would say in Christian music, Verbs, Andale', Pettidee, MOC, and of course Toby. Outside of CCM, I would love to work with someone like Lupe Fiasco...even though he is Muslim, he is very open about his religion and I can respect that...he also thinks before he writes.

6. What do you think about the current state of urban Christian music? Is it at a crossroads?
It's dead...good thing about Christianity is, it's based on a resurrection.

7. Who are some of your favorite DJs?

Maj, z-trip, promote, form, Jazzy Jeff.

8. What projects are next on your calendar?

We'll I can't really say...lets just put it this way. There are a few project available, I'm choosing which one I want to dive into...but something is coming. The XXXchurch is moving to Las Vegas

When was the last time you prayed for a prostitute or porn star? For Craig Gross, founder of the XXXchurch, praying for those caught up in the sex industry is worth all the criticism he gets from both sides of the spectrum.

Some Christians think he's gone too far with his ministry, they can't see the value of him reaching out to those in such seedy situations. On the other hand, some non-Christians can't understand why he's there in the first place because they don't see a problem with the lifestyles of those in the sex industry. But whatever people are saying, good or bad, Gross doesn't let that stop him from helping those in need. In fact, he's taking the XXXchurch to a new level. In 2009 the XXXchurch will be moving its headquarters to Las Vegas. In the following video, Gross talks about his excitement for this new venture.

Band Spotlight: The Golden Sounds

Listening to The Golden Sounds makes you feel like you're on a magic carpet ride. Todd Evans' voice is calm yet moving, gently urging you on a contemplative musical journey. Along the road you'll encounter good doses of intriguing lyrics, gorgeous melodies and nicely placed cello accompaniments. If you only listen to one song, make sure it's "Whistles and Windchimes" because it's extremely impressive and the melody will linger with you throughout the day.

Todd was kind enough to share some insights with Think Virtue! about the inspiration behind his music, some of his favorite bands and his aspiration to compose some original material for films.

1. How do you strive for creativity and originality in your music?

That question is one I ask myself, and maybe that is what pushes me through. There's not a formula except for striving to get the feeling out of the music that I had in my head. Usually I know that I have accomplished that when the song or music gives me feelings I even didn't intend. It has a life of its own.

2. When did you start wearing lights for your performances? And what do they symbolize?

I pretty much wear them every time I play. First, it takes me out of my element, and second I think it takes the audience out of their element for a brief moment so they can hear the songs differently. Regardless of what the song is about, I want the music to bring some sort of light into people's eyes. So hey, if the music doesn't do it...maybe the coat of lights will.

3. Could you talk about the inspiration behind "Whistles and Windchimes"? And why was it so important for you to share this song with the world?

This is the first time I have ever officially answered this question, because the song itself does have a life of its own and does tend to grow into the mood of whatever the listener is at the moment. Originally, this was a very sarcastic song. After 9-11 our government started releasing all of those yellow and orange alerts to help us know if we were safe or not. I honestly couldn't believe that we all were falling for that false sense of security. If anything, it made you more anxious. We looked at the screen and listened to the radio and were like, "uh oh, orange alert...oh, wait...yellow...that's good." It was just a bunch of "whistles and windchimes" going off trying to make sure we calm our fears in the midst of the same threats we have always had. So like I said, very sarcastic. There are images in the song of bombs and missiles going off while we are nicely in bed almost singing us to sleep cause we are ignoring the threat because we "feel" safe. We blissfully watch everything go up in flames...cause hey..."it's all happy now with whistles and windchimes."

While that is the main inspiration, it also does touch on a lot of relationship issues and looking back at warning signs and realizing we should have listened to them. And it can be a very uplifting song, cause there is a part of us that has our own "Whistles and Windchimes"...not warnings...but beautiful sounds that pull us through difficult times. So a combination of a lot of things. Wow...that was a long answer. Sorry.

4. What music do you listen to when you're in an introspective mood?

The Golden Sounds! The Golden Sounds!...all right not really. I don't like listening to my voice that much. So I have a lot of stuff I listen to in those moments like...Neutral Milk Hotel, James, Sigur Ros, London Suede, Iron and Wine, The Violet Burning, Aphex Twin, Autechre...uh...well I could keep on with the list...but let's just say a little of everything.

5. What do you hope fans get from listening to The Golden Sounds?

My hope is that people find hope. Not every song is hopeful in its content, but it relates to painful moments and happy moments. I think having music that matches things that goes on in your life brings hope. It will let you cry with it or let you feel good with it. But the point is that no one is alone.

6. Would you be interested in scoring soundtracks for some independent films?

Absolutely. Some of The Golden Sounds songs are being looked at for some TV shows but I would love to write specifically for something...that would be very interesting.

7. Anything else that you'd like to add?

I would like to add 4+4 because it equals 8...and I like the number 8.
I like 7 too...but 4+4 does not equal 7.

Our Deepest Needs

Love. Appreciation. Connection.

At our core, we're very much the same. We need to love and be loved. We need to be appreciated and appreciate others. We need to make deep connections with people and we need to connect with a purpose that ignites our passion.

The best stories touch on these aspects. Romeo & Juliet, Titanic, Forrest Gump and The Lord of the Rings are few examples. And the heartbeat of humanity will keep producing stories with these truths.

Everything we need can be found in God's embrace. Love, appreciation and connection are important to God because they are important to us. He knows us at our essence. He's familiar with every thought and every emotion. God knows what we need the most and we have to remind ourselves of that.

Material goods can make us happy for a while but eternal goods keep us happy forever.

Mexico's Emos vs. Punks

Some people really hate emos.

I first learned about this issue when I was reading an article in Spin magazine. It's sad to think that people are fighting over looks but as I started doing some online research it became apparent that there's more to it than clothes. The anti-emo campaign seems to have an undertone of anti-homosexuals, which makes sense because Mexico is more conservative in that regards. Machismo is a big thing for the males. Punks and goths have a tougher persona and they dislike the fact that emos are stealing parts of their culture and cheapening it. And that's explaining the issue with a broad stroke.

They call them emosexuals and in March a massive number of punks used some social networking sites to campaign real-life attacks on emos. Things got so messy that the police had to get involved.

I don't condone the homosexual lifestyle but hate crimes are never okay. And just because guys wear skinny jeans that doesn't automatically make them gay or bisexual. It's the person behind the image that really counts. As the old saying goes, "Looks can be deceiving." Prejudice only gets you in trouble.

I only found one Christian perspective on the emos vs. punks issue but there should be some more. It's actually much-needed. Christians who rock the emo and punk style can reach out to those hurting from whatever side they may be on. Jesus said blessed are the peacemakers, so here's an opportunity for the Church to make a positive difference in the lives of some teens.

Music Spotlight: Eowyn

Eowyn is a fiercely independent music artist. While other singers are more concerned with becoming "the next big thing" Eowyn's focus seems to be on making honest music that connects with her fans. Her latest album Silent Screams aspires to be an anthem for the brokenhearted with its emotionally charged lyrics and brazen vibe.

I was able to ask a few questions to the rocker who exudes a laid-back confidence and a bit of mystique.

1. How would you explain your style?

Well, musically I like to describe it as industrial rock. Industrial in the fact that there is a lot of unusual sounds, but rock because of the heavy electric riffs. As far as personally, I don't really know how to describe my style. I went to school for fashion and actually have a degree in it, so I love trying new things. I've been described as Goth because I like black hair and wear a lot of eyeliner, but that's not how I would describe myself.

2. Image is very important in our society and you have the rock star look covered. Do you ever find it challenging when people first meet you and they bring their preconceived notions of what you're supposed to be/act like?

It can be challenging at times. I think a lot of times people have a preconceived notion of what a Christian should look like, and it doesn't always include a nose ring and heavy eyeliner. My guys [band] have tattoos as well, so they also get a lot of looks. I dress and look the way I do because it's what makes me feel good about myself, it's just my personal style and I believe that when people really get to know me they'll see my love for God, not just the way I look.

3. What kind of responses do you get from fans about your music?
Since the album's release in April, there has been a great response. People seem to be having a lot of great things to say about the album, which I am so excited about. I personally am very happy with this album because it reflects everything I had prayed that it would.

4. Do you think that Christian radio is doing a good job of exposing their audiences to a diverse array of musical genres? If not, what would you like to see happen in the industry?

I am so thankful for Christian radio stations, especially my genre, Christian rock. To be honest, I wouldn't be where I am without them! I think there should be more of these stations because I believe there is a huge audience out there waiting to get the chance to hear Christian rock! My other thought is that I have noticed that there are a few stations that never play independents, and that is sad to me, because some bands/artists choose to stay independent. I think with the industry changing so drastically and independents being able to capture as many fans as the labels, and make high quality albums themselves, more stations should give independents a chance.

5. Your MySpace page says you have "a theatrical stage presence." Could you talk about your approach to performing?

I love approaching my concert as if it were a theatrical show or play. When I sing, I try to convey the passion in my lyrics through the way I move and facial expressions. I have been told over and over that people can really feel the emotion behind my songs as I sing. I wouldn't want it any other way.

6. What was it like working with producer Travis Wyrick (P.O.D., Pillar, Disciple) on "Silent Screams"?

He's amazing in both talent and personality. He had me laughing one minute and crying the next. He truly brought things out in me that I didn't even know was there. I left his studio with a new confidence in myself as a singer. I'll definitely try to use him again for my next album.

7. You've already collaborated with Rob Beckley of Pillar, who else would you like to hit the studios with?

I would love to work with Lacey from Flyleaf. I think it would be awesome to have two rock girls in a song. So many times you do collaborations with a girl and a guy singer and I think it would be unique to have two girls.

8. I read in another interview that you grew up listening to rap. Any chance of you rapping on your next album?

Haha...no, definitely not! I still like rap at times, but I personally, cannot rap.

9. You're still an independent artist, what would a record label have to offer in order to allure you to sign with them?

I have chosen to stay independent thus far because that is what God has led me to do, label offers have come, but as of now, it is not where I feel God is leading me. I have had three offers thus far, and with each my husband and I go to God, pray about what we should do, then do it, and wait for the outcome. On my current album, I had several investors step forward to help, so I would really want those investors paid off, before I moved forward with a label.

10. What advice would you give young women trying to start their own rock band?

Do what God tells them to do, when He tells them to do it. This industry has certain standards and timelines that are typically followed, but God doesn't work on anyone's timeline. Also, be confident in who God has made them to be.

Band Spotlight: Immanu el

If sunsets had soundtracks they would sound a lot like Immanu el. Their dramatic guitar melodies and piercing vocals fill you with a rush of emotions as they awaken something deeply spiritual in you and wrap you in a musical journey of the human condition.

Immanu el is a Swedish post-rock band with a growing fan base spanning from Europe to Asia and now the United States. Their debut album They'll Come, They Come was released on And The Sound Records (Sweden) and Thomason Sounds (Japan). Fans of mainstream acts like Explosions in the Sky and Sigur Ros will enjoy Immanu el's arrival to the music scene. With stand out tracks like "Astral Days", "Under Your Wings I'll Hide" and "In Valleys" Immanu el proves that they have something special to bring to the world of independent music. But how can they not? With a name like Immanu el, which means "with us is God" in Hebrew you can definitely feel a Heavenly power in their sound. But don't try to box them into a cookie-cutter label of what a "post-rock" band should be. Their music and artistry speaks for itself.

The lead singer, Claes Strängberg, was generous enough to answer a few of my questions about the band and his take on the post-rock music scene.

1. How do you go about creating new songs? What's your process like?

Basically I compose the songs at home or in the studio and we'll take that finished idea and arrange it together when we rehearse. My brother wrote a couple of the songs as well... i guess we're not the band that sits down for hours and jam to find something, we work better out of finished ideas someone created at home. When we come to the point where the arrangements feel good we start to work with the lyrics and the vocals.

2. What are some interesting things you've learned from touring all over the world?

Well this far we've only made one European tour (even though we have two more scheduled and a further one being planned). Of course you learn a lot about how the music industry works and how to handle issues related to that while being on the road. I also think the most interesting part is that you learn about how you and your bandmates work together under pressure and how to handle social issues as well. Its very important that you work well together as a group.

We also got to learn many different kinds of cheese and beer, haha.

3. What epitomizes a great live performance? And what’s your approach to performing on stage?

I think that you need to stay true and believe in what you do, when you're being honest to your music there is so much easier and natural to feel some kind of a connection with your audience. If you radiate that kind of simple honesty then I think you're halfway there.

4. What do you think about the state of post-rock music?

I must say that I'm a little bit fed up with post-rock sometimes, even though I still listen a lot to it. Some post-rock bands make music I simply can't live without but at the same time there are a lot of bands iIdont really like because I can't feel that special tension in the music. I like the ideas of mixing the original sound and effects of post-rock with a more direct and energetic sound.

5. Have you noticed a difference in how your music is embraced between Europe, Japan and the USA?

Not really, its basically the same and I'm kind of happy with that. Somehow the music of ours reflects the same thoughts and feelings wherever we go and for that I'm very grateful. I just hope we get the chance to actually go to the US and Asia for touring as well, then I would definitely know more about it.

6. What core beliefs have you promised your bandmates that you would stay true to?

I would say there aren't any promises like that...it would in that case be to always make the music we really feel like doing and not being that dependent on what people think about it.

7. What's the biggest goal you want the band to accomplish by next year?

That must be to finish the new material for the next record and to get to the point when you feel very good about it. We already made a couple of new songs and got more ideas coming up.

8. Lastly, anything else you'd like to share?

Well, we just posted our tour dates for summer/fall at MySpace. If you or somebody else are interested in experiencing us live you should go and take a look!

9. One last question, are you guys Christian?

I am, some of us are but I couldn't speak for everyone. We're not a Christian band (if there are any such thing), more like a band with a couple of Christians in it.

Actress Spotlight: Yvette Nicole Brown

Yvette Nicole Brown has worked with some of today's hottest stars in Hollywood. The Cleveland native had her big screen debut in the romantic comedy Little Black Book with Brittany Murphy where she played a production assistant. But you might also remember her from the Pine Sol "woo" lottery commercial.

She's had guest starring roles on Girlfriends, Entourage, The Office, Boston Legal, Curb Your Enthusiasm, House M.D., Half & Half and the Disney Channel's That's So Raven.

Brown was kind enough to answer my questions about her road to Hollywood, her upcoming films and the importance of faith amidst it all.

1. When did you get bit by the acting bug?

I've always loved commercials, even when I was a little girl. So I guess I've been "bitten" for as long as I can remember. But I didn't actually start auditioning for things (school plays, local community productions etc.) until I was in junior high school.

2. How did your family react when you told them you decided to be a professional actress?

My family is full of funny creative people, so everybody was pretty supportive. My late uncle, Charles Brown, was a successful actor on Broadway and in television and film. So it's sorta in my blood, I guess.

3. When you made the big move to Los Angeles what were those first few months like?

I moved to L.A. right after college. It was scary at first because I didn't know anybody and I only had a guaranteed place to stay for the first three days...but I had faith that God would make a way...and He truly has every step of the way. I ended up staying with a friend from high school's mom for my first three months in L.A. That was a blessing that came out of nowhere!

4. Who was the first person you called when you found out you got the role in Little Black Book?

I think I called my mom. That seems like the first person I would share that kind of news with. But I honestly can't remember for sure. I'm about 97% sure it was my mom.... she's been the first call for everything good and bad that happens for most of my life.

5. What's your process like when you prepare for a new role?

It depends. For a commercial, often there's not much to prepare. There may not even be lines. But if there are, I just make sure I know them. HA! You never want to be the one to slow down a shoot. For TV my preparation consists of panic...kidding, um, sorta! HA! I'm always nervous that I won't know my lines so I keep running them 24/7. On sitcoms, there's a lot of rehearsal and the script changes everyday until you shoot... and often times while you shoot, so I never really settle completely into the role until it's done. I'm working on that. I really take the fun out the experience for myself, at times...at least that's what I've been told. And in films, I just try to make sure I know my lines backwards and forwards. There can be lots of takes on a film set, but since I'm at the beginning of my career, my roles aren't usually big enough to warrant the director giving me another pass at it if I'm not my best. Those extra takes are reserved for the stars (and rightfully so, they're the ones putting the butts in the seats). Because of that, I've learned to be 100% ready to go each time they yell "action". Yikes, how's that for a long, rambling answer?!

6. What were some of your favorite moments from working on the Drake & Josh show?

I loved filming "The Storm" episode the best because pretty much everyone who recurs on the show was in that episode. It was great to get to hang out with folks I didn't get to see that often. And I really enjoyed any down time between takes just laughing and joking around with everyone on set. The environment on that set was truly one of the best work experiences I’ve had as an actress.

7. What's the best advice you've learned from someone in the biz?

I've gotten a lot of great advice through the years, but something I've learned from my own experience in this business is to not get attached to anything. That may sound a little pessimistic, but the truth of this business is that everything ends. Sometimes it’s after a day on set, for a commercial...a few weeks/months, for a movie...or after a few years (if you're lucky) on a TV show. It all ends. You can't get attached to the shape your life takes at any given moment. You have to stay loose and free and grateful. And pack up and move on when the time comes...and it's going to come. HA!

8. How does your faith keep you grounded in an industry focused on...well, you know what it's focused on?

I decided when I entered this business that the moment I couldn't continue on with my Christianity and morals in tact, that was the day I'd go no further as an actress. My goal when I started acting was to hopefully make some people laugh and make enough money to live off of along the way. Thankfully, I’ve been blessed to do that. Anything else that comes my way, is just icing on an already awesome cake. I think most folks who lose their way in this industry, lose it because they’re focused on riches and fame. And the love and pursuit of those things is what makes you compromise. I think it’s also important to know where your blessings come from. Mine come from God, not a particular studio head or casting director. So I never feel the need to do something I don’t agree with to gain their favor. At best those in power can be used by God to bless me (and thankfully so!) But what’s good in my life doesn't originate with them. As long as I keep my eye on where all the good stuff comes from, I won't be swayed by offers to take part in things that go against what I personally believe. Keeping my eye on God keeps me grounded.

9. What do you do to cheer yourself up when you don't get the part?

I listen to Fred Hammond. Any song by Fred, especially anything from the Pages of Life double CD, is guaranteed to pull me out of whatever funk I may find myself in. HA! I also give myself a time limit on "pity parties". Depending on the part I missed out on, how bad I wanted it and how much I prepared for it... my limit is anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 days. HA! It's self-indulgent to be down too long. The Lord has cattle on a thousand hills. Whatever part I missed out on is not the only part out there. And when I'm honest, I admit that when I'm sad about missing out, it's usually because I didn't do all I could do to prepare. You can't stay in that "poor me" place too long when you didn't do all you could to maximize the opportunity, ya know? That's one to grow on.

10. What advice would you offer young actresses looking to make in it Hollywood?

Read as much as you can about the industry. The internet and book stores are full of info about breaking into the industry. I'd also suggest reading the biographies of folks who've had the kind of career you aspire to have. And also, always believe in your dreams. So many people will tell you that you can't do it. Your job is to not listen to them.

11. You like to share quotes with on your blog. So, what quote is running through your mind now?

Jeremiah 29:11: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." I’m loving that right now! When life feels a little difficult, this helps me put everything back in perspective.

12. What filmmakers/actors would you like to work with in the future?

I would love to work with Sandra Bullock, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Will Smith and Morgan Freeman on the acting side. And Joel Schumacher, Spike Lee, Stephen Soderbergh, and Steven Spielberg on the directing side.

13. Do you see yourself stepping behind the camera (i.e. directing/writing) anytime soon?

I'd love to write something for myself and possible produce projects in the future. Directing is a tall order. I don’t know if I’d ever have the courage to undertake that. But you never know what the future holds.

14. What are some of your upcoming projects?

I've got a few really cool movies coming up. This summer I will be in: Meet Dave with Eddie Murphy (blink and miss me, HA!) And I'll also be playing Matthew McConaughey's assistant in Tropic Thunder. It was directed by Ben Stiller and I had to pinch myself the entire time I was there. I was thinking, "How did little Yvette from East Cleveland end up on this set?" Which when I think about it, it's pretty much how I feel about my whole career! HA! God is truly a miracle worker! But I’m digressing...in 2009, I will be in Repossession Mambo, 500 Days of Summer, The Ugly Truth and Hotel For Dogs. Whew! Again I say...God is GOOD!

Disney Channel Stars Record New Audio Bible For Tweens

Countless prayers of tweens from across the nation have been answered. They'll get to share their Bible study time with Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) and Cody Linley (Hannah Montana). And all the tween girls shouted amen!

Tiger Beat's Blog Girl recently reported that: "Cody Linley told me he just recorded an audio version of the Bible. He’s the voice of Jesus. Corbin Bleu, Emily Osment, Annasophia Robb, Alyson Stoner and Jesse McCartney are also in it."

If you have any tweens in your family then you'll know that those names are as big as Madonna in their realm.

Linley told the Pantagraph that, "Playing the role of Jesus is the most important role I could ever get. I'm never going to get a project that has a stronger message than this." That's a pretty cool thing for an 18-year-old Hollywood heartthrob to say.

And now you have the perfect gift idea for your little nieces and nephews.

Band Spotlight: The Undeserving

The Undeserving is the kind of band that gives you butterflies.

This four-piece rock band out of Ohio makes your stomach flutter with their piercing lyrics, dreamy guitar melodies and mesmerizing vocals. They sing of love, self-discovery, friendship, purpose and hope. There's a graceful innocence and depth to their sound that nourishes your spirit like only good music can.

The one shocker is that they're unsigned. But I'm sure that won't last for long. With exceptional tracks like "Almost Alive", "There for You" and "Something to Hope For" I can easily imagine their music being played in an indie film or finding its way on a soundtrack for music-friendly shows like Grey's Anatomy or One Tree Hill.

I was able to catch up with the lead singer Clay Kirchenbauer and ask him a few questions.

1. What's your songwriting process like?
Well. It's pretty simple. Brennan or I will get an idea and we'll develop until it's time to go to the studio.

2. What's "your something to hope for"? Your source of hope in hard times?
Really, I don't listen to my own music much. I wrote that song for other people to get hope from.

3. What does the phrase "human condition" mean to you?
To me it's the state of mind of a human being

4. What epitomizes a great live performance? And what’s your approach to performing on stage?
To me a great performance starts with great songs. If the artist can convey those songs in a raw emotional way, thats great. As far as for us we just try to be as real as possible on stage.

5. What do you think about the current state of the music industry?
I think that the reason sales are down is not only because of piracy, but because there's a ton of bad music out there. We just try to do our best to write songs people can relate to.

6. What are you looking for in a record label?
Well that's a good question. We just tried to find people we could relate to, and who shared our vision for our songs. More news regarding this soon.

7. Upon success, what core beliefs have you promised your bandmates that you would stay true to?
I think it's most important to not get caught up in all the glitz and glamor of the industry. There's a lot less than you think. We just try to keep our heads on straight and make the best music we can.

8. Lastly, anything else you would like to share?
Sure, I'd like to thank everyone for their support, and stay in touch! Thanks.

The NBA Playoffs

I went to my first NBA playoff game over the weekend. Pistons vs. Magic.

Attending a playoff game is something I've dreamed of for a long time. The cool thing is I had nothing to do with it. God did! He blessed me with the tickets the day of the game and it was so cool to see the Pistons blowout the Magic. Being in a stadium full of excited people is exhilarating. It made me think of what Heaven will be like, just imagine being surrounded by billions of people cheering for Jesus. That's wild! I wonder if there will be thundersticks in Heaven. If so, that would be pretty sweet.

The 2008 Asian Excellence Awards

Last night I watched the 2008 Asian Excellence Awards on E! and the show was so good I wish it lasted longed. Here's my recap:

Sharon Leal won the award for Outstanding Film Actress in This Christmas. She gave a nice acceptance speech thanking her Filipina mother and appreciated the acknowledgement of her work and mixed heritage. Sonja Sohn, of Korean descent, who won the award for Supporting Television Actress in The Wire had similar sentiments. That was really cool.

Kristi Yamaguchi was presented with a special Inspiration Award for profound work in Olympic Ice Skating and for being an encouraging role model for young Asian-Americans. She definitely rocks. I remember watching her when I was little and she was one of my favorites.

Tia Carrere sang a song off her Grammy-nominated album Hawaiiana. You may remember her best from Wayne's World or True Lies. She's done a bunch of things and I'm glad she's still pressing on in Hollywood's tough industry. It would really like to see her star in a quirky drama i.e. something like Juno that could be a hit at all the major film festivals.

America's Best Dance Crew winners the JabbaWockeeZ performed alongside KABA Modern for the opening number. They were undeniably cool.

Lindsay Price gave a teary-eyed speech when she won for Outstanding Television Actress for her role in Lipstick Jungle. I've been a fan of Price's since she was on one of my soap-operas back in the day so it was fun to see her get recognized for her work.

My favorite Dancing With the Stars instructor Cheryl Burke won for Favorite TV personality. She looked fabulous.

Carrie Ann Inaba (Dancing With the Stars judge) and Bobby Lee (MADtv) did a great job hosting the show. Sometimes Lee was a little off with his jokes but he had some real funny ones too.

All in all, the show was a blast. I'm really glad award shows like this exist because celebrating diversity is totally worth it. Congratulations to all nominees and winners. I'm already excited to what new talent will emerge for next year's presentation.

Country Singer Rissi Palmer Talks About Her Faith

I used to not tell people that I was country music fan but now I proudly embrace all of my music tastes. I never liked the "my dog got ran over and my wife left too" style of county music but I definitely enjoyed listening to artists like LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain when I was younger.

I discovered Rissi Palmer last year on MySpace and her catchy "Country Girl" song had me hooked. She's been getting press all over the place: The New York Post, People, Ebony, CNN and in a recent interview with Christianity Today, Palmer talks about the importance of her faith.

"Every night I pray for discernment, more than anything else, more than having a hit record or anything. I just pray that God will give me the power of discernment. I think that's where people go right and go wrong is in their decisions in this industry."

She's got that right. There are plenty of wrong directions in the entertainment industry. Too many young women get caught up in fame game and end up falling apart in the process (i.e. Britney Spears & Lindsay Lohan). It's sad. However, it's refreshing to know that music artists like Palmer are out there trying to be a light.

Tyra Banks asks: "Do Light-Skinned Blacks Have It Easier?"

Tyra Banks isn't the first person to pose this question and she surely won't be the last.

Our country has questions like this ingrained in the fabric of our society and one look at our past serves as a clear reminder why. But this is exactly why it's important to have more minority voices emerge and make their way into public discourse so we can tackle our tainted perceptions and aspire towards something better.

In the picture above, Tyra talks with two sisters as the dark-skinned sister shares the hurt she felt over being seen as less favorable than her light-skinned sister. While her light-skinned sister got all the attention and compliments she wondered when it was going be "her turn" to be considered beautiful. Her pain is real like many other dark-skinned women who live with the wounds of racism in our country.

As a light-skinned woman I cannot deny that there isn't a certain privilege that is associated with fair-skin. Yes, I have reaped some benefits from my genetic make-up but I didn't ask to look the way I do, God made me that way. However, God did give me a choice on how I would define myself in this world.

I can't speak for all light-skinned people but I must point out that our struggles and hardships come in a different form. It's not that one is better than the other because we are all equal in God's eyes. Jesus didn't die for "just" white people or "just" for black people. He died for ALL people.

Sin doesn't have a color line, it invades people of every ethnicity and every skin hue and sometimes it rears its ugly head in the shape of racism and prejudice. But when good people stand up to it like Tyra did on her show it's a step toward healing and a step away from all the negative mess.

Tia Mowry Married

With all the bad news that makes the headlines it's pleasant to hear something that makes you smile. Case in point: Tia Mowry got married over the weekend.

You probably remember her best as the "brainy" twin from Sister, Sister. Re-runs of that show still play daily and it's nice to catch an episode when I can. She's still one of my favorite actresses.

Mowry married a fellow actor, Cory Hardict, from ABC Family's Lincoln Heights. She looks beautiful in her wedding gown and I wish her all the best in her marriage and career.

Lastly, I'll leave you with a quote by Mowry from a 2005 Today's Christian interview:

"Jesus Christ wants everybody to see that whether you're rich or poor, a doctor or a janitor, God sees us all the same and looks at our heart."

Indie GoGo - A New Way to Do Film

MySpace revoultionzed the the music industry connecting bands with millions of fans. Music artists like Colbie Caillat, Kate Voegele and the oh-so-annoying Soulja Boy were propelled into mainstream spotlight and became household pop culture names. Now, Indie GoGo, a new social networking site, is looking to create that same type of buzz around independent filmmakers.

Their concept is similar to that of MySpace but with a little twist. Indie filmmakers create profiles for their projects and fans create profiles to connect with the filmmakers who fit their taste. But here's where things get interesting, fans can donate money to help the filmmaker reach their budget goal. So for the price of a DVD, you can help a filmmaker become that much closer to getting their film made. Indie GoGo has dubbed this new type of filmmaking: "DIWO" a.k.a "Do It With Others".

IndieGoGo also offers some cool widgets to promote the films you support on your website or blog.

All kinds of film genres are available from quirky dramas to action flicks to documentaries and everything in between. And even if you decide not to give a single dollar, I'm sure indie filmmakers are happy to get new fans who appreciate their artistic vision.

Band Spotlight: Mono

Mono is a Japanese band and their music is so beautiful and soul-stirring it doesn't need any lyrics.

Their guitar melodies tells stories all by themselves, leading you toward deep reflection while massaging your mind with lingering notes and well placed crescendos. Bands like Mono are exactly why the repeat button on your iPod or CD player was created because you can listen to their songs over and over again and still want more.

Playing the Guitar

I've wanted to learn how to play the guitar for a long, LONG, time and now I'm finally turning that dream into a reality.

I have a natural ear for music and my experience of being in orchestra from elementary to high school definitely makes the transition smoother. I printed out some tabs from my favorite music artists like P.O.D., Starflyer 59, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus and Kelly Clarkson and I'm doing my best to move my fingers like the pros do. I'm also learning the theme song from Friday Night Lights, the way Explosions in the Sky plays that song is amazing! Learning how to play the guitar is easy, hard and fun all rolled together. And that's the cool thing about it.

Miley Cyrus in talks to star in film adaptation of Christian novel

Radio Disney is one of my favorite stations to listen to while I'm in the car. The music is fun, upbeat, and full of positive lyrics that encourage listeners to follow their dreams. Sure, it's geared towards tweens and teens but I know I'm not the only adult who enjoys singing along to the High School Musical soundtracks. What I like most about Radio Disney is that it has created a family-friendly atmosphere where young Christians like Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Aly & AJ and Corbin Bleu can share their music on a national platform and show kids that they don't have to be wild and raunchy to be successful in the entertainment industry.

That's why I was really excited to find out that one of my favorite Christian authors, Karen Kingsbury, is hoping to team up with Miley Cyrus in a film adaptation. Kingsbury's March 20th newsletter said this:

"Again, I can’t tell you many details . . . but I can say that our purpose in meeting up with Miley was to discuss her deep interest in starring in one of the upcoming movies based on my books. Miley loves Jesus very much. Please continue to pray for her and her family."

Now that you've heard the news, let's get to praying!

Movie Magic Screenwriter

I just wanted to share how happy I am with my new Movie Magic Screenwriter program!

I got it in the mail earlier this month and I'm enjoying figuring out all the little shortcuts and transferring my screenplays into proper professional format. It truly makes screenwriting easier because like they advertised, you can focus on the writing instead of the mechanics.

It's exhilarating to be one step closer to finalizing my scripts and then sending them out to agents and some select producers and actors I have in mind.

My scripts range from character-driven dramas to family films to science fiction tales. Since those are my favorite genres it makes sense that my writing would reflect that. In the future I hope to tackle some romantic comedies because I like those too but I already have a full load of scripts to transfer to Movie Magic so I'll be holding off on that for a bit.

Screenwriting is such an exciting and challenging venture. It takes lots of patience, persistence and tons of creativity. But most importantly it takes the courage to sit down and put those God-given big ideas on paper knowing that the 1st draft isn't going to be perfect and to keep refining the story draft by draft until it is finely chiseled.

Your Art Matters

Deep down inside we want to know that what we do matters. That what we create has meaning and resonates with someone on a heart-to-heart level. And when we're feeling insecure and at our lowest we want someone to be remind us to never give up because it matters to them.

This scene from One Tree Hill really stuck with me because it illustrates just that. You may or may not be a fan of the show but if you're an artist, writer, musician or any other type of creative person then these three words will touch you in a truly profound way: "Your art matters."

If you need someone to whisper those words to your soul then look no further than God because you and your art matter to Him. Keep pressing on!

Paula Patton on Essence Cover

Paula Patton isn't a household name yet but if you're someone who values emerging talent then you'll want to keep an eye on her career.

Patton made a favorable impression on me with a small part in Hitch alongside Will Smith. She was the "It Girl" at the bar and even though her lines were limited she had an amazing presence. After that I had to find out who she was because I knew some casting director was thinking the same thing I was: potential. Shortly after that she was cast as the lead in Idlewild, a musical set in the South opposite Andre Benjamin of Outkast and "Hey Ya!" fame. But what really put her on the Hollywood radar was her performance as Claire Kuchever in the sci-fi thriller Deju Vu where she shared the screen with Denzel Washington. It wasn't a major box-office hit but anything with Denzel is going to get peoples' attention. I've watched the movie about five times when I rented it because the premise was so cool.

In a brief period of time Patton has become one of my favorite actresses and it would be a dream come true if I got to work with her on a project or even better yet have her star in one of my films. When I saw Patton on the cover of Essence's March issue I had to buy it because A.) I couldn't help but be happy for her success and B.) I collect magazines. Hopefully in a few years time Patton's resume will be full of critically acclaimed roles and plenty of magazine cover shoots.

Do you ever think about Jesus' Jewish roots?

Sometimes I wonder how we, meaning American Christians, seem to know so little about Hebrew things. Somehow throughout the years we've distanced ourselves from all things Jewish. There's this gap, this disconnect between the Israelites in the Bible and Jewish people of today. It's as if we've mystified the Israelites in the Bible and forget that they too were people just like us.

Sure, we know that Jesus is "the Way, the Truth and the Life" but how many of us know that Jesus' birth name is Yeshua?

When you really care about someone you take the time to get to know them. You're intentional about being familiarized with the big and little things about them. You get up close and personal. Not only do you know what they stand for, you know where they came from. You ask questions about the neighborhood they grew up in, the kind food their mother cooked, how they celebrated their holidays when they were young and the list goes on.

In our contemporary worship services we lift our voices and sing lyrics like "I want to know You. I want to hear Your voice. I want to know You more. I want to touch You. I want to see Your face. I want to know You more." But when was the last time you were emboldened to do something as simple as researching the Hebrew culture during that era so you could get a better cultural context and get a deeper meaning of the Bible? Or what about taking the initiative to find a Messianic Jew and ask them to explain some things about Jewish culture?

Doesn't learning details about a person's background help us know more about them???

Sometimes it seems easier to declare we want more of God, but forget about doing practical things like reading our Bible and doing some good ol' fashion Bible study. Especially us Christian Americans, we have so much knowledge at our disposal, every type of Bible translation is but one trip to the local bookstore. Wouldn't it be worth it for someone we claim to love?

I'm no expert in Jewish ways and I'm far from a Bible scholar but I can challenge myself to make an intentional effort to learn more about Jesus in this regard.

And isn't that what Jesus asks us to do anyways. To love him with all of our mind, our soul, our very being. To seek Him above all. To knock at the door of Judaism and learn more about our spiritual roots.

I encourage you to read "What is Messianic Judaism?" by Rabbi Loren and Rabbi Glenn in your journey to better know your MOST significant other.

Jesus is true Judaism and true Christianity. It's that simple.

Yeshua's heritage is a part of our history as Christians, let's not forget that.

Stanford University Offers Free Tuition...

Yep. You read that right.

The New York Times reports:

"Stanford University on Wednesday became the latest prominent university to expand financial aid well into the middle class. It announced that students from families earning less than $100,000 a year would not be charged tuition. Under the new system, which takes effect in the fall, families earning less than $60,000 would not pay for room and board."

Isn't that awesome??? Admist the failings of our current public education system it's encouraging to see positive waves of change like this in the higher educational realm. Hopefully other colleges and universities will take note and create similar programs that will give lower-income families a better chance at a good education. Spread the word.

Real Church Presents...Night Light

Last Saturday there were search lights in Hamtramck, Mich. and they didn't come from one of the many bars. Those raging beams of light were pointing people toward Real Church.

Hamtramck is one of the most ethnically diverse cities I've been to. It originally started off as a Polish immigrant town but now as you ride down the street you'll see blacks, whites, Indian-Americans, Arab-Americans and a nice blend of people from various Eastern European countries (i.e. Bosnia & Armenia). And Real Church reaches out to all those people. Our church represents the community it surrounds. It's so cool to look around the sanctuary and see people of all types of skin colors praising Jesus. It's a nice reminder of how Heaven will be.

Night Light is our new coffee-house like service that meets on Saturday nights at 8 p.m. The atmosphere is pretty laid-back, there's original artwork on the walls and there's plenty of candles to give it a thought-provoking vibe.

Opening night went great! I had a table set-up for my Faith & Social Justice Meet-Up, which is basically me bringing Think Virtue! to life in an off-line kind of way. So if you live in Michigan and want to be part of the meet-up send me an email: solshine7[at]hotmail[dot]com - I'll keep you posted on our future meetings and events. I'd like to do a Faith & Social Justice Short Film Fest, a charity concert with various social conscious bands and a karaoke contest along with partnering with local churches in their ministries to the needy. 1st Annual Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival 2008

Finally there's a film festival for mixed people!

When I was younger there weren't any forums for children of interracial couples to talk about our issues and share our experiences with one another. But I'm so glad that things have changed for the better. Halle Berry won an Oscar, Tiger Woods rules the fairway and there's a biracial canidate running for president. It's good to be mixed!

The ladies over at MixedChicksChat.com are putting together the 1st Annual Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival to be held in Los Angeles on June 12th - 15th at the Japanese American National Museum. They have an open call for submissions (films, artwork, poetry, etc.) and it's free to submit. They're also taking requests for workshops, so if public speaking is your thing then maybe you can craft a workshop for the festival. Slideluck Potshow

In the heart of Mexicantown, Michigan I enjoyed one of the most interesting art shows ever: The Slideluck Potshow.

The idea behind the Slideluck Potshow combines an old-school slideshow gathering with a potluck dinner, but it's totally revamped for a twenty-something crowd. You get that nostalgic feeling of sharing your photos with friends mixed with cutting-edge artistic endeavors. The slideshow consists of several artists, where each power-point slideshow presentation is about five minutes long. One of the best things about the show is how each artist uses music to amplify their images and create a mood for their work.

The Slideluck Potshow is touring all over the U.S. so check out their website and submit your photos. And who knows, maybe someone could blog about how much fun they had viewing your stuff.

Missing Minorities

There's this episode of CSI: Miami where Adam Rodriguez's character has to come to grips with the inequalities between the cases of two missing teenage girls. When the white girl goes missing the media spotlights her story. But on the other hand, when a Latina girl goes missing there's no such fanfare. In a poignant scene Rodriguez stands on the coast, staring at the ocean as he struggles to make sense of this harsh reality as his female coworker tries to offer him words of comfort.

I'm not a fan of CSI but this episode really grabbed me. Like Rodriguez's character, I often grapple with such injustices and try to make sense of it all. Having someone you love turn up missing must be one of the the worst feelings in the world. I wish that I could say without a doubt that skin color doesn't play an in issue in who gets national attention, but I can't. And I'm not the only one who feels this way. Dateline NBC and USA Today both have articles about this concern.

The system is broken, but don't lose hope. Here's a couple of blogs you can visit to help those who are missed.

There's a certain joy that comes when you see your favorite band live in concert. A wave of excitement rushes over you as they take the stage and sing the first note. You get lost in the melodies and harmonies like a kid in Narnia, and just for a few moments you get caught up in the beauty fills the space and you forget about what's happening outside those four walls.

In America, we can choose to listen to everything from Switchfoot to Kirk Franklin. We can go to the Woodstock-esque summer music festivals and see loads of Christian music artists in all types of varieties. If you like rock, you can head bang to a hardcore Christian rock band. If rock's not your thing, you can see TobyMac and get your hip-hop groove on. And if you want Latin music, we've got that too.

But not everyone has that freedom.

Please take the time to watch this video about how Vietnamese Christians rejoiced as a Christian band performed for the FIRST time in a public forum. May it serve as a reminder to us American Christians to be thankful for the privileges we have.

The Obama/Huckabee Ticket

The Iowa Caucuses got me thinking...

What if Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee joined forces and ran together?

They seem like a good match, both claim that they would make it their goal to unite our country with bipartisan efforts. But what could be more bipartisan than this?

People like Obama; he represents change in so many ways. And Huckabee stands firm on his Christian beliefs, plus he's Chuck Norris approved. Does it get any better than that?

I've been following the debates and trying to figure out who would be best for this country and so far this idea sounds pretty good.

And if they're successful in their term(s) that would set Huckabee up for a nice run as president to finish up the work.

Neither one of them is perfect, and of course there are issues that I disagree with them on. But you can only pray, be informed and hope for the best. The rest is in God's hands.

So what are your thoughts on the 2008 presidential candidates??? Do you think this could ever happen?

Sunsets of Yesterday and Tomorrow

The sun has set on 2007 and a new year is before us. What does the future hold?

Some big questions still linger in the air like: "When will the war in Iraq end?" and "Who will be our next president?"

But even those seemingly "big" questions pale in comparison to the smaller ones that aren't constantly plastered in the media yet drive humanity and give our lives true meaning like "What is our purpose in life?"

Rob's "Just After Sunset" seems to capture that feeling because there's something about sunsets that trigger reflection on the past and speculation of the future.

We do not know what tomorrow's sunrise will bring us or what news we will have learned by tomorrow's sunset. But we do have now, this moment, this time, to look toward the Heaven and pray to God for change. For change in our world. Our government. Our neighborhood. And most importantly, our hearts.
